Angel Partnerships

The Angel Squad partners with groups and organizations throughout the community to promote breast cancer awareness and raise funds for patient services.

Reach to Recovery

Reach to Recovery (R to R) is the American Cancer Society’s program for peer support, one survivor to a newly diagnosed survivor. All patients who wish a visit during clinic have a R to R volunteer who presents the patient with a handmade pillow and bag containing essential breast cancer information. All R to R volunteers have been trained by ACS and several of the Angels also function as R to R volunteers.

Jim ‘N Nick’s

In 2002, the Angel Squad and Jim ‘N Nick’s Restaurants formed a strong partnership to raise breast cancer awareness in the Birmingham area. Every year on National Mammography Day (the third Friday in October), Angels are present in each participating Jim ‘N Nick’s restaurant to educate the public on the importance of early detection through mammograms.

Angels distribute informational brochures and packets to customers, as well as pink ribbons and gifts throughout the day. They decorate the restaurants and are available to answer general questions about breast cancer, the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Angel Squad. Angels also participate in employee meetings on National Mammography Day to provide information about breast cancer to the restaurant staff.

This has become an annual event and has expanded to include several Jim ‘N Nick’s restaurants outside the Birmingham area in addition to local restaurants. Each year, Jim ‘N Nick’s makes a generous donation to the Angel Squad, while the Angels sell Jim ‘N Nick’s gift cards during the last quarter of the year to show their appreciation for the ongoing commitment to the Angel Squad and the breast cancer patients they serve. With the dedicated support of Jim ‘N Nick’s, the Angels are able to meet the physical needs of patients and provide them with the care, hope and compassion needed during their breast cancer journey.

Zeta Tau Alpha

Zeta Tau Alpha, which has a chapter at Samford University in Birmingham, has selected Breast Cancer Education and Awareness as its philanthropy project. As part of that commitment, the local chapter, Delta Si, works directly with the Angel Squad to provide support for breast cancer patients at the Breast Health Center (BHC) at Kirklin Clinic.

Members of this sorority create beautiful baskets for all new breast cancer patients when they initially with the Interdisciplinary Breast Cancer Center Team of doctors assigned to their cases. During the year, members of the Zetas create several hundred unique baskets that are especially designed for breast cancer patients and bring them to the BHC for distribution. The baskets and the care and concern they represent are true blessings to breast cancer patients as they begin their journey on the road to recovery.

In addition, Zeta Tau Alpha is involved with fundraising for breast cancer, “Think Pink” Events at Samford and “Storm the Dorms” campaigns which provide students with self breast assessment cards and other service opportunities.

Royal Cup Coffee

Originally founded in 1896, Royal Cup Coffee has been importing, roasting, and distributing fine coffees and teas for more than 100 years. Headquartered in Birmingham, Royal Cup has established itself as one of the nation’s leading coffee and tea producers, “serving the best coffee coast to coast.”

Royal Cup provides coffee and tea to many well known restaurants, hotels, and offices across the country. Royal Cup also has partnered with the Angel Squad by donating canned juices for patients undergoing diagnostic testing for breast cancer in the Mammography Clinic at The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital. Testing is a critical and extensive process in the care and treatment of patients. The juice provided by Royal Cup is a true ministry to these patients, who often are in the clinic for several hours, during the diagnostic phase of treatment.

Bessemer Fire Department

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October of each year), firefighters at the Bessemer Fire Department design, purchase and sell t-shirts promoting breast cancer awareness to the public. This is a community effort and is widely publicized within the Bessemer Area. Proceeds from the sale of the t-shirts are donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of  Alabama (BCRFA) and to the Angel Squad.

Donations to the Angel Squad from the Bessemer Fire Department are critical in providing snacks and information packages to patients, assisting patients in financial need and enhancing the ability of the Angel Squad to care and support breast cancer patients at The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital.
