Associate Director for Clinical Programs
Martin J. Heslin, M.D., MSHA, is a Professor and Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery, Chief of the Medical Staff at UAB Hospital, and Senior Scientist at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Dr. Heslin specializes in the research and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers and soft-tissue sarcomas. He is the director of the Multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal Oncology Clinic, which was created to provide all complex gastrointestinal cancer patients with a truly multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of their disease. Dr Heslin manages liver, pancreas, colorectal, esophageal and gastric cancer as part of a multidisciplinary process. He also specializes in the care of patients with soft tissue sarcoma and endocrine tumors located in the pancreas, small bowel and adrenal glands.
Dr Heslin created and continues to co-manage a large human tissue bank to support innovative research in the Department of Surgery. He is involved with genetic analyses of these tumors and the correlation with patient outcomes. He is involved with health services research and improving the overall care of the cancer patient through efficiency, safety and improved patient satisfaction.
Dr. Heslin was recruited to UAB in 1996 from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he completed clinical and research fellowships. He received his B.S. from Cornell University and his M.D. from SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse. He completed his residency at New York University Medical Center.
