Senior Advisor to the Director

Kirby I. Bland M.D., FACS, is Senior Advisor to the Director of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and the former Fay Kerner Fletcher Professor and is now Professor and Chair Emeritus, as well as, Distinguished Faculty Scholar in the School of Medicine. Bland served as Deputy Director from 2000 until 2009. He is internationally renowned for his contributions to surgical oncology and for his distinguished career as a surgeon, researcher, and educator.

Dr. Bland’s principal research interests are currently those related to breast cancer and include clinical trials and molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis. Dr. Bland was the Principal Investigator for two NIH – funded SPOREs (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) for Breast Cancer grants from the National Cancer Institute (NIH) at UAB, as well as the Cancer Center’s T – 32 training grant in surgical oncology. The latter grant emphasized and funded young surgical clinical-scientist investigators in various types of organ system cancer and remains one of the longest running funded T-32s nationally.

Dr. Bland is currently an active Editorial Board member of fifteen scientific peer – reviewed surgical and medical journals including the Annals of Surgery, Surgery, and Journal of the American College of Surgeons among others. Since January 2005 he has served as Editor – in Chief of the American Journal of Surgery. He formerly served several years   on the Advisory Committee to the Director, NIH; NCI’s Board of Scientific Advisors and the NCI’s Clinical Trials Advisory Committee. Dr. Bland is a past-president of the American Surgical Association and five other national surgical associations; was First Vice President of the American College of Surgeons; serving on the American Board of Surgery as a Director and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery; he was a Member and Chair of the Residency Review Committee in Surgery. He is a past Distinguished Faculty Lecturer at UAB, and in 2017 was awarded the President’s Medal of UAB.

Prior to joining the UAB faculty in 1999, Dr. Bland held the J. Murray Beardsley Professor and Chair at Brown University, where he was surgeon- in- chief for Brown University hospitals. Before those appointments he was Clinical Director of the University of Florida Cancer Center. Bland received his medical degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham at Birmingham, his full and comprehensive surgical training and research at the University of Florida College of Medicine, and was a surgical oncology fellow and research scientist at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
